SPF by Skin Type: Oily, Dry and Combination

Everyone tells you to wear sunscreen. Far fewer people explain that the type of sunscreen matters just as much as wearing it. The right SPF for your skin type is the one that feels good enough that you'll actually reach for it every day. Here's how to match it to your skin.

First, the Non-Negotiables

Whatever your skin type, look for broad-spectrum protection (it covers both UVA and UVB) and at least SPF 30, ideally SPF 50 for our climate. Beyond that, it comes down to texture.

Oily and Acne-Prone Skin

You want a lightweight, matte-finish, oil-free sunscreen, ideally labelled non-comedogenic (won't clog pores). Gel and fluid textures are your friends. Avoid thick, heavy creams that sit on top of the skin and mix with your natural oil to feel greasy by noon. A good lightweight SPF actually helps you look less shiny, not more.

Dry Skin

You can handle—and will benefit from—a more hydrating, cream-based sunscreen. Look for formulas with added moisturising ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. These protect while keeping skin comfortable, so you don't get that tight, flaky feeling on top of sun protection.

Combination Skin

The trickiest type, because you're oily in the T-zone and drier on the cheeks. A balanced, lightweight lotion usually works best—hydrating enough for the dry areas without overwhelming the oily ones. Many combination-skin folks find a single lightweight formula across the whole face is simpler and works fine.

The White Cast Problem

For all desi skin types, the real dealbreaker is the white cast some sunscreens leave on deeper tones. That ashy film isn't a sign the SPF is strong—it's a sign it wasn't formulated with our skin in mind. Look for sunscreens tested on South Asian tones that blend in clear. A sunscreen that makes you look grey is one you'll stop wearing.

The Ladyfinger Take

The best sunscreen is genuinely the one you'll wear daily without complaint. Match the texture to your skin type, insist on no white cast, and the daily habit becomes effortless. That consistency—not the number on the bottle—is what protects your skin long term.
