Skincare Myths Our Desi Mothers Told Us

Every desi household has its own skincare wisdom, passed down from mothers, aunties and grandmothers with absolute confidence. Some of it is genuinely good. A lot of it, sadly, does more harm than good. Let's go through the big ones—with love, but with the facts.

Myth 1: "Toothpaste dries out pimples"

It does dry them—by burning your skin. Toothpaste contains ingredients that irritate and damage the skin barrier, often leaving a dark mark worse than the pimple. Use an actual spot treatment instead.

Myth 2: "You don't need sunscreen indoors"

UVA rays pass through windows and cause pigmentation and ageing. If you sit near a window or travel by car during the day, you're getting sun exposure. Indoors near light is not the same as in a windowless room.

Myth 3: "Besan and lemon will give you glow"

Besan as a gentle cleanser is harmless enough. But lemon is a real problem. It's highly acidic, disrupts your skin's pH, and—worst of all—makes your skin extremely sun-sensitive, which leads to burns and dark patches. Please keep the lemon in the kitchen.

Myth 4: "Oily skin doesn't need moisturiser"

Skip moisturiser and your skin produces more oil to compensate. Oily skin needs hydration too—just a lighter, oil-free formula. Dehydrated skin is often the cause of excess shine, not the cure.

Myth 5: "Expensive means better"

Price tells you very little about whether an ingredient suits your skin. Some of the most effective ingredients—niacinamide, salicylic acid, basic sunscreen—are affordable. A thoughtful cheap routine beats a random expensive one every time.

Myth 6: "Fairness creams will fix your skin"

This is the one we feel most strongly about. Products promising to change your skin colour often contain harsh, barrier-damaging ingredients—and the premise itself is wrong. Healthy skin is the goal: even-toned, calm, and free of dullness. Your natural tone was never the problem.

The Ladyfinger Take

Our elders meant well, and some kitchen wisdom holds up. But your skin deserves the version backed by evidence, not just tradition. Be gentle, protect from the sun, moisturise, and ignore anything promising to change who you are. That's the real nuskha.
