Do You Really Need to Double Cleanse?

Double cleansing—washing your face twice, first with an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based one—has become a skincare commandment online. But is it something Pakistani women actually need every day, or is it just another step being sold to you? The answer depends on your day.

What Double Cleansing Is

The idea is simple. Oil dissolves oil. The first cleanse—an oil, balm, or micellar water—breaks down everything oil-based: sunscreen, makeup, sebum, and pollution. The second cleanse—a regular face wash—cleans the skin underneath. Together they get your face properly clean without you having to scrub hard.

When You Genuinely Need It

Double cleansing earns its place at night if you've worn:

  1. Sunscreen. Proper SPF is designed to cling to your skin all day, which means a single quick wash often doesn't fully remove it.
  2. Makeup. Especially long-wear foundation, kajal and mascara.
  3. A full day in city pollution and dust. Lahore and Karachi air leaves a film that one wash struggles with.

If sunscreen or makeup sits on your skin overnight, it can clog pores and cause breakouts—so this is where the second cleanse really matters.

When It's Overkill

In the morning, you don't need to double cleanse. Your skin has been on a clean pillow all night. A single gentle wash—or even just water—is plenty. Double cleansing every morning will likely strip your skin and irritate your barrier.

If you stayed home all day with bare skin, a single evening cleanse is also fine.

How to Do It Without Over-Stripping

Keep both cleansers gentle. The goal is clean, comfortable skin—not skin that feels squeaky and tight. If your face feels stripped after cleansing, your products are too harsh, no matter how many steps you use.

The Ladyfinger Take

Double cleanse at night when you've worn sunscreen or makeup—which, if you're following our advice on SPF, is every day. Single cleanse in the morning. That's the whole rule. It's not about doing more steps; it's about actually removing what's on your skin so the rest of your routine can work.
